About Appledore and the Area

Appledore is a quaint old fisherman’s village built on a hillside with mazes of narrow lanes leading to an attractive medley of closely packed, brightly painted cottages, decorated with hanging baskets. The quay is delightfully busy, somewhere to sit and have breakfast or lunch and enjoy the view, perhaps a spot of crabbing.Famous for its artists and craftsmen, the village now boasts a festival with the Appledore Crafts Company where you can find a broad range of arts and crafts from ceramics, photography, jewellery and paintings.

There are walks alongside the river towards Bideford and Westward Ho! which hosts a variety of pubs and restaurants and offer a wide range of local seafood. Make sure to catch a seasonal ferry from Appledore to the sweeping beach of Instow to sit and watch the colourful boats bobbing on the water. One of the most beautiful beaches in North Devon.

Clovelly Beach

25-minute drive – Clovelly has a small pebble beach below this historic village. The area is good for snorkelling and the beach is protected from the strongest waves by the old harbour wall.

Lee Bay

40 minute drive - 2 Miles to the West of Ilfracombe is Lee Bay a charming sand and shingle beach backing onto an equally charming village.

Northam Burrows Country Park

One of our favourite treks starts at Appledore’s main car park on the seafront and follows the coast path for several miles to Northam Burrows Country Park, and an opportunity to view its diverse range of coastal habitats.

Gray Sands

6 minutes drive – This is an idyllic spot to while away a quiet afternoon. Just around the corner from the glorious sandy stretch of Westward Ho! It’s quieter and still has sand to stroll along even when the tide is in.

South West Coat Path

The South West Coat Path winds its way through Appledore offering scenic walks along North Devon’s dramatic coastline.

North Devon Maritime Museum

Instow Beach – 12 minutes by car or a 15 minute boat ride - Located on the edge of the Torridge estuary, Instow beach is blessed with fine, soft sand. As the beach doesn’t face directly into the Atlantic its sheltered from the surf.

Appledore is a dream come true, the seafront with its many sailboats, fishermen and beaches is enough to entice anyone there for a holiday.   Having successfully run 3 holiday lets in Cornwall for 5 years, we now want to explore North Devon.  We bought a gorgeous 2 bedroom regency flat which looks out to the sea/estuary.  The view is stunning, the seafront is thriving.  People sit outside having breakfast, lunch or just drinks or you can just stroll along the quay and buy fish freshly caught that morning, or buy a Hocking’s ice cream, about the best we have ever had.  The many pubs and restaurants all in walking distance just added to the fact that we have the famous John’s deli and grocery shop below our apartment.
